304 vs 316 Stainless Steel: Selection Tips from Our Factory Floor Experts

The customer enters the room with the drawings, and the first thing they say is usually: ‘Master, is it 304 vs 316 stainless steel?”

As a processing factory that handles these two materials every day, we have seen cases where materials were wrongly selected and had to be reworked, as well as instances where high costs were incurred due to a misguided desire for ‘safety’. This article does not list any parameters but summarizes the practical experience obtained through a single line of bending, welding, and polishing. The first step in sheet metal design optimization is often to select the right material. If the material is chosen wrongly, all subsequent processes will be in vain.

304 vs 316 Stainless Steel: The Key Difference Is Molybdenum (Mo)

Customers always ask which is better, 304 or 316. The truth is: there is no absolute good or bad; it depends on whether it suits your specific use case.

The core difference between the two lies in one thing: molybdenum (Mo). 304 does not contain molybdenum, while 316 contains 2% to 3% of molybdenum. This difference may seem insignificant, but in the workshop, we see completely different results.

The function of molybdenum is to make the passivation film on the surface of stainless steel more stable. In salt water, coastal areas, or places with chemical media, the passivation film of 304 is prone to be penetrated by chloride ions, resulting in pitting corrosion — that is, those small pits visible to the naked eye on the surface. 316, because it contains molybdenum, can withstand this kind of corrosion.

304 vs 316 Stainless Steel Fabrication: Differences in Bending, Welding, and Finishing

Some customers think, “The materials are basically the same anyway, and the processing is the same too.” But those who have worked in the workshop know that this is completely different.

Bending 316 Stainless Steel Requires Different Process Control

In actual processing, 316 typically exhibits a greater tendency toward work hardening. Under the same thickness and structural design, the bending pressure, springback control, and mold compensation parameters all need to be readjusted. When adjusting the precision sheet metal mold, the springback compensation value for 316 needs to be calculated separately. Use the experience of 304 as a reference – the dimensions may deviate from the standard.

316L Provides Better Welding Performance in Corrosive Applications

Both can be welded. Due to its low-carbon design, 316L can reduce the risk of intergranular corrosion after welding, making it more commonly used in welded structural components and applications with high corrosion-resistance requirements. If welding large structural components, 316L is more convenient than 316.

304 Stainless Steel Can Be a Better Choice for Polished Surfaces

If the customer desires a mirror-like effect, the 304 material already has excellent brightness after polishing. The 316 material can also be used, but it will be more expensive. Just for the sake of “appearing nice”, the 304 material is perfectly sufficient.

When Should You Choose 316 Stainless Steel Instead of 304?

Based on our experience, the following three situations require the use of 316:

Marine and Salt Spray Environments

Coastal facilities, ship components, coastal guardrails – 304 material won’t last for long before it gets corroded. This is not a matter of quality; it’s simply a case of choosing the wrong material.

Chemical and Chloride Exposure Applications

Chemical plant equipment, pharmaceutical machinery, flue gas desulfurization system. 316 is the standard configuration.

High-Humidity Food and Medical Applications

The biocompatibility and corrosion resistance of 316 are more reliable.

If none of the above applies——if it’s just about indoor equipment, kitchenware, decorative items, or general industrial parts——304 can handle it perfectly, and the cost is 30% to 40% lower.

The master craftsman’s quick material selection formula

Our workshop has compiled a mnemonic to serve as a reference for everyone:

“Look at the environment, the budget, and the lifespan.”

Environment: Contains salt, acid, and chlorine → Choose 316; Dry indoor environment → Choose 304
Budget: Willing to accept premium and environmental requirements → 316; Budget limited, but environmental conditions are mild → 304 is sufficient
Service life: For applications requiring maintenance-free operation for over 10 years in corrosive environments → 316; For regular use with periodic maintenance → 304 is acceptable

Real Project Example: Why a Coastal Guardrail Required 316 Stainless Steel

Initial Requirement: A 304 Stainless Steel Specification

Last spring, a general contractor working on a coastal park project came to us with a set of drawings. His words: “304 grade, 45-day lead time. Can you handle it?”

We looked at the drawings — standard guardrail posts, nothing complicated. But when we asked for the site location, he said: “200 meters from the shoreline.” We recommended 316 on the spot. In a salt-spray zone that close to the sea, 304 is a gamble. Pitting corrosion doesn’t take years — it can start in months.

The client hesitated. The reason was quite realistic: the cost of 316 material was 35% higher than that of 304, and the total cost difference for the entire guardrail project was nearly 200,000 yuan. The client’s budget has already been approved, and temporarily changing the material requires going through a new process, which is too troublesome.

He said: “Let’s stick with 304. It should hold.”

Engineering Review: Identifying Long-Term Corrosion Risks

We respect the client’s decision, but we did two things before cutting the material:

  • First, a written material selection recommendation letter was issued, stating that “304 has a risk of pitting corrosion in the coastal salt spray environment”, and the customer signed and confirmed it.
  • Second, during the 72-hour salt spray test, clear signs of corrosion appeared on the 304 sample. In contrast, the surface condition of the 316 sample was significantly more stable.

The client saw the sample and was silent for a while. Then he said, “I’ll go back and re-report the plan to the client.”

Material Upgrade Decision: Choosing 316 for Long-Term Reliability

Two weeks later, the client returned with the new approval from Party A: “All to be made of 316 material, and follow the original schedule.”

The project was completed nearly two years ago, and the guardrail surface remains as shiny as new. The customer said something we often hear over the phone: “It was worth spending those 200,000 yuan at that time.”
